The New York City rental market moves a bit faster than markets in many other U.S. cities. It also may have requirements and lingo that you’re not familiar with from past rentals. If you’re embarking on an NYC rental search for the first time, you can:
- Read our Pathways to the Private Market brochure. Our guide to the NYC rental market includes the basics of apartment hunting in the city, typical financial requirements for renters, and helpful checklists for when you begin your apartment search.
- Contact us if you’re a Weill Cornell Medicine employee or student looking for a broker referral. Many NYC apartments are only listed through real estate brokers, the majority of whom charge a fee for their services. If you wish to use a broker, we can refer you to our preferred broker who offers a 12% fixed fee when applicable, but may have some no-fee apartments as well. We will collect some information about your housing preferences and needs, and if we believe our broker may be able to assist you, we will make a referral on your behalf.
- Explore the market. To get a sense of current apartment availability and pricing in neighborhoods that interest you, you can start looking at apartments online. Keep in mind that most apartments in New York City aren’t listed until about a month before the available move-in date. You can start browsing earlier if you want to get a sense of pricing in different neighborhoods and apartment styles, but it’s unlikely that anything will be available when you’re ready to move.
