FAQs for Postdoctoral Associates

Q: How do I apply for housing?

A: Once you sign your appointment letter, ask your department to provide you with a housing application. Postdoc housing inventory is limited, so please complete the application and submit it to us as soon as possible. Learn more about the housing application process.

Q: Are all postdocs eligible for housing?

A: Yes, however newly-recruited postdocs receive priority for housing assignments.

Q: Is a security deposit required?

A: Yes. It must be paid by check; we do not accept cash or credit cards for security deposits.

Q: How do I set up utilities?

A: Southtown & Riverwalk: Water and heat are included in your rent, but you are responsible for gas and electric. You must set up your account with Con Edison—NYC’s gas and electric provider— prior to moving in. You can also contact a local cable provider for cable TV and internet service.

The House at Cornell Tech: All utilities are included in your monthly housing fee. You don't need to take any action to set up services.

Q: Does WCM offer postdoc housing anywhere other than Roosevelt Island?

A: No. All postdocs live in our Roosevelt Island properties.

Q: How long can I live in WCM housing?

A: Postdocs can live in WCM housing for up to five years. We will send you a reminder before your housing eligibility ends so you can begin looking for off-campus accommodations.

Q: What happens to my housing if I’m no longer employed by Weill Cornell Medicine?

A: If your employment with WCM ends for any reason, you have up to three days from your employment end date to vacate your apartment.

Q: Are pets permitted in postdoc housing?

A: Pets are permitted at Southtown and Riverwalk. Approval is required and a fee may apply. For more details, incoming residents can contact Housing, while current residents can speak with building staff at the concierge desk.
